Two U.S. Army soldiers have been reported missing during a military training exercise in Morocco, U.S. Africa Command said on Sunday, as search and rescue operations continued.
The soldiers were participating in African Lion 2026, an annual multinational exercise involving U.S. forces, NATO allies and African partner nations. They were reported missing on Saturday near the Cap Draa training area, close to the city of Tan-Tan in southern Morocco.
A U.S. defense official said initial reports suggest the servicemembers may have fallen from a cliff into the ocean. Authorities believe the incident appears to be accidental and not linked to terrorism or kidnapping.
Search efforts involving U.S., Moroccan and allied forces are ongoing, with ground, air and maritime resources deployed to locate the missing soldiers.

The incident remains under investigation and the search is ongoing. Our focus is on the service members involved and their families,” U.S. Africa Command said in a statement.
African Lion is the largest annual joint military exercise on the continent and is held across multiple countries, including Morocco, Ghana, Senegal and Tunisia. The drills focus on crisis response, multinational coordination and regional security preparedness.
