As world leaders prepare to convene in France for the 2026 G7 Summit, the streets of Geneva are sending a powerful message: public trust in the world’s most influential economies is facing renewed scrutiny.
Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Switzerland on Sunday ahead of the three-day summit in nearby Evian-les-Bains, France. Organized by the “No-G7” coalition—a network of more than 60 organizations including environmental groups, feminist movements, and Palestinian rights advocates—the protest highlighted growing frustration with global political and economic leadership.
The demonstration was not merely a reaction to a single issue. Instead, it reflected a broader dissatisfaction with the policies of major Western powers, particularly at a time when conflicts, climate concerns, and economic uncertainty continue to dominate international headlines.
According to organizers, the movement aims to challenge what they view as policies that contribute to global instability, military conflicts, and environmental degradation.
Francoise Nyffeler, a spokesperson for the coalition, expressed concerns about the direction of global politics and the role played by G7 nations in shaping international affairs. Protesters argued that decisions made by the world’s most powerful governments often have far-reaching consequences for communities far beyond their borders.
Environmental concerns were also a major theme. Activists accused leading economies of failing to take sufficient action to address climate change despite years of international commitments and climate agreements.
While officials have kept specific details closely guarded, the structural framework of the discussion is clear. The two leaders are heavily expected to address a long-negotiated bilateral trade pact aimed at easing tariff frictions and opening market access between the world’s two largest democracies.
Beyond direct commerce, the discussions will weave into broader regional and global matters of mutual concern. According to senior White House officials, President Trump intends to use his time at the summit to address issues of shared economic importance, including:
A core priority for Washington, particularly regarding the securing of critical minerals essential for advanced technologies and defense sectors.
Setting international frameworks, safety boundaries, and commercial standards for AI development.
Synchronizing policies to ensure domestic job growth while keeping international trade pathways fluid.
A staple policy focus of the Trump administration that requires cooperation from key global partners.

While officials noted that no formal, independent bilateral meeting is currently planned on the schedule between Trump and Zelenskyy, they explicitly left the door open for the two leaders to meet informally on the sidelines of the summit.
As the G7 leaders converge on Evian next week, the Trump-Modi meeting stands out as a critical barometer for the future of Indo-Pacific strategy, supply chain independence from China, and the economic trajectory of the U.S. and India moving deeper into the late 2020s.
