Ukrainian drones struck key Russian oil infrastructure on Sunday, including the Baltic Sea port of Port of Primorsk, as Kyiv intensified efforts to disrupt Moscow’s energy exports.
The overnight attack caused a fire at the facility, according to regional governor Alexander Drozdenko, who said there was no immediate indication of an oil spill. He did not provide details on casualties or the extent of the damage.
The port, operated by state pipeline monopoly Transneft, is one of Russia’s largest oil export terminals and handles hundreds of thousands of barrels per day. It lies more than 1,000 km (620 miles) from Ukraine, near St. Petersburg and close to the Russian-Finnish border.
Ukraine also targeted two oil tankers that it said were being used to transport Russian crude in violation of international sanctions, part of a broader campaign to curb Moscow’s oil revenues.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had struck multiple military and infrastructure targets, including causing significant damage to oil export facilities.
Recent Ukrainian attacks have increasingly focused on Russia’s energy sector, particularly ports in the Baltic Sea. The ports, including Primorsk, account for roughly 40% of Russia’s oil exports, making them critical to the country’s economy.
The strikes come as Ukraine seeks to weaken Russia’s financial capacity amid ongoing conflict, with energy revenues remaining a key source of funding for Moscow.
